Bought this for my young son due to the simplicity of the game. Turns out my wife and I play it every other night after the kids go to sleep because it is so much fun! We have two of the WII Wheels for the extra excitement of the game.. It's a blast.
ARRRGGHH!!!!!

I bought this game to try it out July 11th, since then I've played about 12-15 hours. I wanted a game that was easy to jump into. Boy was it a mistake getting this game.
The game punishes you for being good. 1st place? Not for long!
Everyone from 4th-12th place gets stars, red shells, green shells, blue shells (which hit exclusively those in 1st place), lightening / POW which hit all but he or she whom uses it, and speed boost. Once hit by a blueshell, youll then get bombarded by green shells and red shells and run off the track by other players. Once hit by lightening or POW you lose all your itmes. Period.
But do not fret 1st placer, you will get so many banana's that you actually go banana's. Thats not all, you may get an upside down cube... or *gasp* green shell that you can blindly throw backwards.
But if you suck at this game, boy are you gonna love it. You get stars to knock everyone out of the way, or even a bullet which is basically an automatic first place. Screw up again and again? No worry, more stars and bullets.
I dont mind chance, I love chance (such as poker). But imagine texas hold em if the losing person automatically got pocket aces every hand while the chip leader got 7 2 offsuit. Not so interested in betting anymore, eh?
It wouldn't be so bad if you got to save an item after getting hit, eg you get a mushroom while in 6th place and get hit by lightening but you dont drop the mushroom. Or if, FOR THE LOVE OF (insert preferred deity) the first place person could get some kinda shield... every once in awhile.
Nintendo's pretty damned arrogant thinking I want to play Luigi's Circuit 32,768 times in order to unlock Baby Daisy.
Online mode? Im getting better. But as with most any online game, noobs are gonna get frustrated by those who have played dozens of hours and can get through the courses with their eyes closed.
The game feels close to impossible using the motion sensors. While the motion controls are good, the level of drifting accuracy needed to compensate for the cheap POS computer can only be done with a remote.
This would be a fun party game with friends, but if you get this and expect to jump right in and kick some mario butt, please reconsider. There will be words coming out of your mouth in tounges you never knew. You will be bombarded by shells both online and off. You will lose your mind, body soul. YOU WILL.... well you get the idea.
Nintendo, PLEASE let the items be random in future games. With sugar on top? Please!?!?!?
One of the Best Racing Games Ever

I haven't played a racing game for the Wii that's better than this. With the Wii Wheel, this game is unstoppable fun, not to mention Wi-Fi and up to four players playing the game simultaneously. There's a wide variety of characters to choose from too, ranging from Dry Bowser to Funky Kong to even Rosalina as a gift if you own Super Mario Galaxy. If not, you have to unlock her. There are plenty of bikes and karts to choose from, too, and, if you have a friend code, you can play with a friend from different locations, no matter the distance. There are even lots of race tracks from our favorite Mario Karts, some only having a few changes: they come from Double Dash, DS, 64, even Super Mario Kart. I'm sure any Mario fan can recognize at least a few of the tracks. The battles are also fun, including arenas from previous games like the tracks. There's a lot to do in this game, my favorites being Wi-Fi battles and multi-player races. Mario Kart, you've done it again.
Not as much fun as you would think. Actually, it is frustrating at 150cc.

I am starting to think that their might be 2 versions of this game, you are completely dependent on the random items the computer gets, or you have to memorize what attacks come from where when you have certain items or are in certain spots in the map. This is in reference to 150 cc and mirror level.
I have talked to a number of people. Some say it is easy, they never get hit with shells and they just cream the computer. Others, like myself, find that the game is about surviving the last corner or 2 on the 3rd lap in an 11 vs 1 competition.
When riding in 1st through 4th, I find that I get nailed too often and usually with a regular pattern depending on the item I have in store.
For instance, if I am 2 or 3 corners away from the finish with 3 mushrooms (position irrelevant); I will be red shell'd, star'd to drop my mushrooms, the computer will pick up the 3 mushrooms, and star'd again. This pattern happens so often I burn 2 mushrooms just to prevent it. I have found certain spots on the map I will get hit with bullets and pushed off too regularly. So, I save a mushroom for these spots to get through quickly or ride the edge. (Actually, I ride the edge most everywhere now.)
I have also found that I get stuck on invisible walls or the clipping is bad in spots. So I have learned to avoid them.
The down side to moving too fast is that you tend to over jump the designed landing and either fly into a wall or over the edge of the course (only on a few maps).
But on the flip side, I have had a few races where I am half a lap ahead without any troubles. I have also had races where I am half a lap ahead and get hit by a green shell that comes out of a tree (that caused me to quit for a while).
As a result, this game had great potential (50 cc was fun). Now that I have gotten better at it, I have found that this game is less about skill and more about not getting hit on the last few turns of the last lap. The random probability of success or failure is just to frustrating.
My advice is probably like others, sit in 2nd or 3rd and take out the points leader. Don't worry about winning the race you only need to get the most points.
Very Fun

This is fun to play with multiplayer or one player. Trying to unlock new characters can be difficult, but overall its very enjoyable.
