This is a cool and handy device. It's just molded plastic (ABS?) but it does the job. Here in CA it's against the law to put anything on the wind shield. This solves that problem brilliantly, and costs so little. It is well designed and so convenient once you get the hang of attaching it to the A/C vent louvres, which was difficult at first attempt.

Great alternative to other GPS mounts 2010-08-31

I bought this mount so that I could use my GPS in a rental car on vacation. Also because it would be less conspicuous than a window mount for use in my own car. Just back from a 10 day trip and it worked perfectly. It clipped on the vent securely without leaving marks. Easy to take on and off. I removed the entire mount each time we parked the car and just stuck it under the seat. Great value!!

I planned a trip to California this past spring and wanted to take my Nuvi 1490T with me. Since California doesn't allow windshield mounts (except in limited spaces on the windshield), I wanted some alternative mounting point that would keep me legal in California.

I don't like bean bag mounts -- besides the rental car I used had a sloping dash that would make the bean bag mount unstable. This A/C vent mount suited my needs perfectly. I was able to mount it on the drivers side between the steering wheel and door. The bracket is held onto the vent with two alligator clips at the top and a support bracket on the bottom. Pop off the Nuvi holder off the windshield mount and place it on the vent mount stem. It is a tight fit, so it will not move easy after installation.

Using this mount for almost 3,000 miles of driving in Arizona and California, this vent mount held my Nuvi solidly. One additional benefit -- since the A/C was on most of the time, my Nuvi was cooled while driving through the Mohave desert. When I used the windshield mount in the Sonoran desert of Arizona, my Nuvi would heat up, causing speaker distortions.

For the price, capabilities and remaining legal in California, I recommend this model vent mount for your Nuvi.

With no other good place to mount my GPS, I ordered the vent mount. It installed easily, and held firmly. Absolutely perfect for my car.

Removable vent mount works ok ,but the clamps don't grip tight enough.Tends to slip out easily.
